Why remember?

What good can come of this? I saw how people were hanged, how they were shot, and how they were collected. Helmut Fürst, 2007.
I once believed that one could improve the world a little bit (…). I thought, if you can just convince two or three out of fifty or a hundred, then you have already reached a lot. Gerd Landsberg on his involvement as a contemporary witness in schools, 2004.
I often ask myself, why was I liberated? My only answer: in order to tell the world and to hope that something like that will never happen again! The future generation should and must know what happened to us. Lore Oppenheimer, 2000, 1997.
40 years after my liberation I found the courage to write down my life story. All those years, I tried to forget the horror of the Nazi period. (…) When we, the eye witnesses, don’t tell about this terrible time, it will be forgotten in a few years. I feel that I owe it to my mother, my family, the friends and acquaintances that were murdered because of their Jewish belief. Henny Markiewicz-Simon, 1985.
